Modeling Soma Parametric Twisted Facade

A deep dive into advanced Revit massing environment and adaptive components to create complex kinetic facades.

Project Overview

The Soma Facade is a prime example of kinetic architecture, featuring a "breathing" building skin that responds to environmental conditions. In this tutorial, we deconstruct the geometry of this complex facade and rebuild it using Revit's native parametric tools.

This project challenges the common misconception that Revit is only for "boxy" buildings. By leveraging the Massing Environment and Adaptive Component families, we can create highly sophisticated, twistable, and deployable geometries that remain fully BIM-compliant.

Technical Workflow

1. Rationalizing the Geometry

Analyzing the twisting motion of the facade fins. We establish the primary reference lines and varying profiles needed to achieve the 90-degree twist.

2. Adaptive Component Creation

Building a 4-point adaptive family that can stretch and conform to any surface. This includes setting up the skeletal rig of reference lines and point drivers.

3. Parametric Trigonometry

implementing rotation parameters driven by sine/cosine functions to simulate the organic "wave" motion of the facade opening and closing.

4. Massing & Hosting

Dividing the main building surface using UV grids and hosting the adaptive component. We use the Repeater tool to populate the entire facade efficiently.
